Dedan Kimathi Foundation’s Undying Transformational Zeal
A National Commitment to Environmental Revival
The Kenyan government’s Nairobi Rivers Regeneration Initiative, launched in March 2025, is a crucial environmental program designed to revitalize the rivers flowing through Nairobi—fondly known as the “Green City under the Sun.” The initiative seeks to restore the rivers as clean water sources for residents while enhancing their ecological and economic value.
Climate Worx Initiative: Empowering the Urban Youth
At the heart of this transformation is the Climate Worx Initiative, a dynamic program engaging young people across the city. It provides them with paid opportunities to engage in waste management, riparian zone rehabilitation, and tree planting—all while fostering a deep sense of environmental stewardship.
Kayole North: Weekly Tree-Growing Culture
In Kayole North Location of Embakasi Central Subcounty, tree growing has become a weekly tradition. The community’s dedication extends beyond planting; consistent weekend watering ensures long-term survival and growth of the trees.
On this remarkable day, Dedan Kimathi Foundation (DKF), in collaboration with the Kayole North NGAO team, Climate Worx Initiative casuals, National Youth Service, and local residents, successfully planted 3,000 assorted tree seedlings in the Cobra and Matopeni areas along the Ngong River.
These seedlings were graciously donated by the Kenya Defence Forces 14th Brigade in Nanyuki and Tupande Tree Nurseries by One Acre Fund.
Youth Engagement
DKF environmental leaders used the opportunity to engage young workers in meaningful dialogue, emphasizing the importance of long-term commitment and ownership of the project. The youth were encouraged to become agents of change—not just laborers—but custodians of the river ecosystem they live beside.
Schools Join the Green Movement
Teachers and students from Charmon Bright and Esvak Community Schools, inspired by DKF’s previous impact in the area, actively participated in the initiative. Their involvement offered a practical platform for environmental mentorship—highlighting themes such as waste management, climate resilience, and water conservation.
Mentoring the Next Generation of Environmental Stewards
Prior to planting at Matopeni, nearly 150 learners took part in a one-hour mentorship session led by DKF and partners. The session aimed to cultivate environmental consciousness and leadership in young minds, nurturing them as future ambassadors of green living. The students’ attentiveness and thought-provoking contributions reflected their readiness to take up Wangari Maathai’s legacy.

Enriching Tree Cover
To crown the day’s efforts, the team scattered 25 kilograms of Acacia xanthroploea seedballs, generously provided by Seedballs Kenya, helping to further enrich the tree cover and biodiversity of the Ngong River corridor.
