Fostering Growth

Environmental Stewardship, Academic Support, and Community Aid at Olgos Comprehensive School – Kajiado Central

Empowering Kajiado Through Tree Growing

On Thursday, 24th July 2025, the Dedan Kimathi Foundation, driven by a deep commitment to environmental conservation through sustainable tree growing, engaged learners and community members at Olgos Comprehensive School in Kajiado County. Situated in a semi-arid region dependent on tourism and livestock rearing, the area currently has a modest 10.94% tree cover.

Our visit underscored the urgent need for environmental action to help Kajiado reach its 30% tree cover target by 2032—a move that would increase pasture for livestock, improve cooling, and enhance rainfall across the region.

Climate Education and Tree Planting

In collaboration with the Indoinyo Youth Alliance, we hosted a dynamic event featuring environmental mentorship and climate change sensitization. This program culminated in a hands-on tree planting activity with enthusiastic participation from students and teachers of Olgos, Ole Narau, and Engasure Comprehensive Schools.

Our team inspired learners and their parents to actively protect the environment, highlighting both long-term benefits and best practices for nurturing young trees.

Mentorship on Academic Excellence and Girls’ Hygiene

Beyond environmental stewardship, our Foundation partnered with Toto Kalezi Foundation, Boychild Love Foundation, and Zipporah Lemaiyan Foundation to deliver vital mentorship on academic performance, self-esteem, and menstrual hygiene.

We engaged students—especially girls—in discussions aimed at combating period shame and limited access to hygiene products, while promoting confidence and school retention.

Community Dialogue on Harmful Practices

In a special session with parents, we facilitated an open conversation addressing key social issues, including:

  • Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)
  • Early and Forced Marriages

These practices continue to hinder the potential of both boys and girls. We urged families to embrace education, freedom, and equal opportunity for all children.

Humanitarian Support to Vulnerable Families

Our humanitarian outreach included:

  • Distribution of sanitary towels to adolescent girls
  • Provision of essential foodstuffs to vulnerable families
  • Supply of toothbrushes, toothpaste, and pens to support students’ hygiene and learning needs

In partnership with Ms. Zipporah Lemaiyan, First Lady of Dallalekutuk Ward, and the Indoinyo Youth Alliance, the Dedan Kimathi Foundation has pledged ongoing mentorship programs in the remaining 18 public comprehensive schools in the ward. This initiative will continue to reinforce our commitment to academic empowerment, environmental stewardship, and holistic community development.
