Adopt a Tree – Trans-Nzoia County Edition
40 SCHOOLS , 20,000 TREES IN 4 DAYS.
With a tree cover between 18 to 22%, Trans-Nzoia County is the ‘Grain Basket’ of our beautiful country. Its high forest cover is a result of farmers tree growing efforts as well as the presence of Mt. Elgon forest and the vast Cherangany hills. Playing above the 12% tree cover, the county strives to grow the deficit to attain 30% national tree cover as targeted by the government by the year 2032.
In efforts to ensure the gap is is narrowed, Dedan Kimathi Foundation takes the lead in a one-week multi-stakeholder tree growing series targeting 40 comprehensive schools, a police station and a GSU camp. All the identified sites are within Endebess SubCounty. The activities dubbed ‘Adopt a Tree’ – Trans-Nzoia County edition purposes to nurture students to be environmental ambassadors by playing active roles in sustainable tree growing.
Being conducted in partnership with Kenya Forest Service, Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service (KEPHIS), Kenya Seed Company- Kitale and Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO); the initiative has an extremely high chance of nurturing a myriad of hearts that care for the environment.
Wednesday 13th May 2026 being the first day of impact which our Field Director Elsey arrived for the 20,000 tree planting ecercise; the combined team had 4000 trees planted at Endebess Police Station, Miti Mbili GSU camp, Naifarm, Amani and Andersen comprehensive schools. Each tree planted was an assignment left on the hands of the committed students to water, protect and ensure survival of their trees.
It was really heart-warming to share in the enthusiasm of the students, police and GSU officers as they made their hands dirty for a cleaner, greener and more sustainable future. To them, they are on a must-accomplish mission of protecting the very lands which feed them and put money in their pockets through agriculture. They strongly understand they cannot afford to experience the negative effects of climate change.
