Resettling the Veterans
At the Dedan Kimathi Foundation, honoring our nation’s heroes is not just a choice but a sacred responsibility. Among the most overlooked yet deserving members of our society are the Mau Mau veterans and other freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives, health, and families for the liberation of Kenya. Decades after independence, many of these patriots continue to live in deplorable conditions; landless, homeless, and forgotten. Resettling these veterans remains one of our top priorities.
Honoring Sacrifice with Dignity
The sacrifices made by these brave men and women cannot be quantified. They fought under unimaginable conditions facing brutality, imprisonment, and torture not for personal gain, but for the collective freedom of our nation. It is disheartening to know that many still struggle to find decent shelter or access to basic services. Through our resettlement program, we are determined to change this narrative and restore their smiles.
The Resettlement Initiative
Our resettlement initiative is a long-term project that provides:
- Decent Housing: We construct makeshift, weather-resilient homes tailored for the elderly and their dependents.
- Sustainable Livelihoods: We support small-scale farming, poultry keeping, and cottage industries to empower them economically.
- Access to Health Services: Many veterans are aged and in poor health. We partner with health providers to ensure they receive needed medical attention.
- Psychosocial Support: We offer counseling, home visits, and community engagement to combat isolation and promote mental well-being.
Beyond Shelter—Restoring Dignity
Resettlement is about more than just building houses. It is about restoring dignity and hope. It’s about ensuring that these heroes feel seen, valued, and respected. With every home we build, every food basket we deliver, and every smile we restore, we bring justice to our collective memory.
Partnerships that Make a Difference
Dedan Kimathi Foundation collaborates with government agencies, private partners, NGOs, and individual well-wishers. We welcome volunteers, donors, and friends of Kenya’s freedom story to join us on this journey. Together, we can ensure that no veteran is left behind.
Join Us
We invite you to participate in this noble mission. Every contribution matters be it a shilling, a building stone, a visit, or a prayer. Let us not wait for another hero to die in silence before we act. This is our moment to give back with gratitude.
Let us restore their smiles not out of pity, but out of deep reverence for the freedom we enjoy today.
