From Weeds to Wonders: Njabini Nursery’s Journey
September 10, 2025
The Dedan Kimathi Foundation Njambini team gathered bright and early this morning at our mega tree nursery, united by our shared mission of restoring Kenya’s green heritage. Despite the soggy conditions caused by last night’s heavy rains, the team of seven showed their resilience and dedication to ensuring every seedling thrives.
Morning Kickoff
The day began with a brief meeting, where tasks were allocated and safety emphasized due to the slippery, muddy grounds. With clear roles and a spirit of teamwork, the team quickly set to work.
Activities of the Day
🌱 Nursery Cleaning
The first task was a thorough clean-up of the nursery. Fallen leaves, debris, and other waste were carefully cleared to improve air circulation and maintain a healthy environment for the seedlings.
🌿 Weeding the Seedbeds
The team meticulously weeded each seedbed, removing unwanted plants competing for nutrients, sunlight, and water. This delicate work required patience and care to avoid disturbing the young seedlings, ensuring they continue to grow strong.
Weather Impact
The rains were both a blessing and a challenge. On one hand, they provided sufficient natural moisture for the seedlings, eliminating the need for watering. On the other, the muddy conditions prevented certain activities such as pricking (transplanting seedlings into bags), which could have harmed the delicate roots if attempted.
Tasks Postponed
Watering: Skipped, as the rains had already provided ample hydration.
Pricking: Deferred until the soil dries and conditions are more favorable.
Observations and Recommendations
The rainfall was beneficial, yet it highlighted the need for flexible scheduling in nursery management. Pricking will be rescheduled for a drier day to safeguard the seedlings’ roots.
Team Spirit
Despite the challenges, the Njambini team showcased outstanding cooperation and commitment. Their collective effort ensured the nursery remained in excellent condition, paving the way for future growth.
🌍 At the Dedan Kimathi Foundation, every day in the nursery is a step closer to a greener, more sustainable Kenya.
