Murang’a County’s Commitment to Greening Kenya

Boasting a 27.8% tree cover, Murang’a County stands out as a leader in Kenya’s journey toward achieving the national target of 30% tree cover by 2032. As the saying goes, “To whom much is given, much is expected,” and Murang’a has set an ambitious goal of planting 13.4 million trees annually. This aligns with the government’s broader target of 15 billion trees

The Role of Institutions in Tree Conservation

In a recent interview, Murang’a County Forest Conservator Ms. E. Njoroge emphasized her office’s commitment to expanding forest cover through enrichment and rehabilitative planting in gazetted forests. She also underscored the importance of partnerships with farmers and learning institutions in promoting sustainable forestry practices.

Celebrating 101 Years of Kagumo Primary with Trees

In celebration of Kagumo Primary School’s 101st anniversary since its establishment in 1924, the Dedan Kimathi Foundation (DKF) joined alumni and friends of the school in a commemorative tree growing event. Led by the Foundation’s Environment Conservation Team, participants planted 400 indigenous tree seedlings to mark the historic occasion.

Why Indigenous Trees Matter

The decision to plant indigenous trees—despite the faster growth and economic appeal of exotic species—highlighted the symbolic importance of the event. Indigenous trees not only support biodiversity but also offer better long-term ecological benefits, underscoring the school’s dedication to sustainable environmental practices.

‘Adopt a Tree’ Programme: Growing with Ownership

Through its ‘Adopt a Tree’ programme, DKF ensures that tree planting translates into successful tree growing. Beneficiary institutions like Kagumo Primary take full ownership of planted trees, promoting aftercare and survival. The programme also educates learners and community members on tree species selection, planting density, and care practices to maximize impact.

Tree Growing as Symbol of Unity and Hope

Tree growing is more than just an environmental activity—it is a powerful act of unity and a hopeful gesture towards a greener tomorrow. Dedan Kimathi Foundation remains steadfast in its mission to champion sustainability and climate resilience through continuous conservation efforts.
