A Multi-County Commitment to Environmental Restoration

Tree Growing In Tharaka Nithi, Nyandarua, Laikipia And Nairobi Counties

Mobilizing for the Rainy Seasons

For tree-growers, the two rainy seasons experienced annually mean a period of utmost devotion to tree planting to take maximum advantage of every drop of rain. With the national target of 30% tree cover by 2032, the two seasons are periods of continuous action to attend as many sites as possible to increase tree cover hence reverse the negative effects of climate change.

Dedan Kimathi Foundation’s journey to 50 million trees as its contribution to the 15 billions target has continued to keep the environment team bee-busy conducting environmental education, climate change sensitization and multiple tree growing activities in public spaces spread across the nation.

Seedling Production Hubs in Nyandarua and Laikipia

In Nyandarua County, the Foundation has a section of the team at the tree nursery producing tree seedlings to be distributed to public sites over the October Short rains. Soil collection from the Forest, potting, seeds sowing and pricking out/in are among the routine activities being carried out at the nursery to increase tree seedlings production. Similar activities are the norm at the Foundation tree nursery at Dedan Kimathi Village in Thome within the Laikipia West Subcounty. Thome tree nursery targets dozens of public spaces in Laikipia County besides the members of public whose spirit of conservation is likely to sprout with speed upon education of necessity of tree growing to counter strong winds, increase rain, improve water retention in the soil, reduce soil erosion, increase income through sale of products among other benefits.
