Powering Our 50 Million Tree Growing Mission

A tree planted is a hope ignited and a future secured. Dedan Kimathi Foundation has an eagle focus on environmental conservation with high specificity on sustainable tree growing. Our tree growing ambition lies in the desire to acknowledge the sacrifices of freedom fighters by continuing with their course to safeguard humanity.

Beyond our year-long tree growing activities around the country with partners, our youthful environment volunteers spend uncountable hours on our tree nurseries each month to produce quality tree seedlings for donation and distribution to public sites. Their commitment has been the backbone of our greening agenda.

On Saturday 20th September 2025, as the global attention bent towards the World Clean Up Day, the foundation central tree nursery in Kinangop was a beehive of activities. DKF CEO, Ms. Evelyn Kimathi, took a moment to educate the youth volunteers and Dedan Kimathi Children’s home on the role trees play in climate change mitigation. She urged them not to focus on the little earnings from their casual work but the environmental benefits of the trees to be grown out of the seedlings they produce. Emphasizing on the DKF agenda to support the Presidential 15 Billion Tree Growing and Forest Restoration Campaign by growing 50 Million trees by 2032, she motivated the team to give the production sector the energy it deserves to attain the goal.

Dedan Kimathi Foundation believes in the power of ‘Leaving No One Behind’ for successful restoration of degraded lands and afforestation of more sites to attain 30% national tree cover. School children, students in secondary schools and tertiary institutions, faith based organizations, doctors in medical facilities, NGAO and police officers, prisoners and the members of public play a role in sustainable tree growing. Most importantly, freedom heroes and remnants of the freedom struggle hold the central stage in the foundation restoration program; they remain committed to ensure the land they fought for stays clear of climate change negative effects.

Tree growing for DKF is more than just having green scenes, It is more of improving degraded lands, increasing agricultural production through agroforestry and fodder crops for higher livestock yields, reducing exploitation of forests, saving energy, cleaning the air, increasing rainfall and enhancing reliability, increased aesthetics of our environment as well as biodiversity preservation among other benefits attached to trees.
