A Day of Restoration at Sasumwa Dam and Dedan Kimathi Foundation Nursery
October 23, 2025
The day began with a meaningful mission — a monitoring and evaluation exercise at Sasumwa Dam Repalian Land, aimed at assessing the ongoing restoration and rehabilitation activities in the area. I was joined by Inspector Josephat Leshipayo and Forest Ranger Stanley Mutua from the South Kinangop Forest Station, both committed officers passionate about environmental stewardship.

Our visit focused on evaluating the condition of the land, reviewing the progress of tree planting efforts, and identifying challenges affecting restoration. Together, we emphasized the importance of sustainable land management, responsible use of natural resources, and active community participation in conservation. Engaging with local workers on the ground provided an opportunity to share technical insights and encourage best practices for future monitoring and rehabilitation initiatives.
Following the Sasumwa inspection, we proceeded to the Dedan Kimathi Foundation Mega Tree Nursery in Njabini, where we received a warm welcome from the dedicated staff diligently tending to thousands of seedlings. The visit was filled with inspiring moments as Inspector Leshipayo and Ranger Mutua interacted with the team, commending their passion and commitment to restoring Kenya’s green cover.
We joined hands in several hands-on activities — watering, weeding, pricking seedlings, and general nursery maintenance. This shared labor not only fostered a strong sense of teamwork but also symbolized the growing collaboration between the Forestry Department and the Dedan Kimathi Foundation’s environmental program.
Before the day concluded, Inspector Leshipayo expressed heartfelt appreciation to the Foundation’s team for their relentless dedication. He extended a warm invitation to the upcoming Heroes Commemoration Event, marking the 105th Anniversary on October 31, 2025, encouraging all members to take part in honoring Kenya’s heroes through continued environmental action.
The day ended on a high note — productive, inspiring, and deeply fulfilling. It reaffirmed that conservation is not a solitary pursuit but a collective responsibility. Through such partnerships and shared commitment, we continue to nurture a greener, more sustainable future for generations to come.
