Tharaka Nithi ‘Adopt a Tree’ Continues
Greening Schools for a Better Future
Trees are vital to our planet and to life itself. Their majestic canopies provide cooling shade, while their roots absorb water and contribute to the formation of rain, nurturing the ecosystem. In contrast to the arid expanse of a desert, a lush forest showcases the myriad benefits that trees bestow upon the environment. While the act of planting trees can be demanding and requires dedication, it serves as a crucial step in nurturing our Earth and safeguarding its beauty for future generations to enjoy. Each tree planted is a gift to the planet, a promise of a greener, healthier tomorrow.
Why Tharaka Nithi Needs More Trees
Tharaka Nithi County faces extreme heat and still relies heavily on charcoal for fuel. To meet Kenya’s goal of 30% tree cover by 2032, the county must take action. Tree planting must be well planned:
- Sites should have access to water
- Fencing is important to protect young trees
- Students and teachers must be committed to caring for the trees, especially during dry seasons
Dedan Kimathi Foundation Leads the Way
The Dedan Kimathi Foundation has expanded its environmental initiatives in schools, particularly in Maara Sub-county, a significant area in the Eastern Region. Over three weeks, the Foundation conducted conservation activities in various schools, educating students about the importance of trees and their role in mitigating climate change.
Tree Planting on June 17, 2025
On Tuesday, June 17, the ‘Adopt a Tree’ program reached:
- Igwanjau Boys High School
- P.C.E.A Muriki Comprehensive School
- St. Anne Girls
- Kauni Mixed Secondary School
Each school planted 500 tree seedlings with help from Kenya Forest Service officers based at Chogoria Forest Station, who also donated the seedlings.
A Big Day on June 18, 2025
The next day, June 18, was the highlight of the campaign. The team visited seven schools, starting with tree planting and climate education at Kiriani Boys High School, followed by:
- Muthambi Boys and Girls High Schools
- Kariakomo Comprehensive
- Chogoria Girls’ Boarding School
- Chogoria Girls’ High School
A total of 3,500 Grevillea robusta tree seedlings were planted to form new school woodlots. Students at each school adopted and committed to taking care of the trees.
Act Now
As Kenya works toward planting 15 billion trees nationwide, the Dedan Kimathi Foundation reminds everyone that schools play a key role in making this goal a reality. Planting trees today means a greener, cooler, and better future for all.
