Safeguarding Our Future, Sustaining Our Lives

The Mau Forest Complex, the largest indigenous montane forest in East Africa, is more than just a forest—it is the beating heart of our nation’s ecology and economy. As the source of 12 major rivers that flow across Kenya and into neighboring countries, Mau is the lifeline of millions. Its waters sustain agriculture, generate hydro-electric power, fuel tourism, and nourish biodiversity across vast landscapes.

But the forest is not just about rivers and trees. It is a giant carbon reservoir, a natural shield against climate change, and a sanctuary for wildlife. To lose Mau is to lose an irreplaceable asset—a threat to livelihoods, biodiversity, and the very survival of future generations.

Sadly, years of deforestation, encroachment, and poor land use have left parts of Mau degraded, exposing communities and ecosystems to untold risks. A weakened Mau is a weakened Kenya.

A United Call to Action

Recognizing this urgent need, Dedan Kimathi Foundation (DKF) has pledged to work hand-in-hand with the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change & Forestry under the leadership of Cabinet Secretary Deborah Mlongo Barasa, alongside the Mau Complex Integrated Conservation and Livelihood Improvement Program (MFC-ICLIP) patron, Eng. Dr. Festus Ng’eno.

This partnership seeks to breathe life back into Mau, not just by planting trees, but by restoring ecosystems and empowering communities to thrive in harmony with nature.

1 Million Seedlings for Mau

In a bold show of commitment, the CEO of DKF, Ms. Evelyn Kimathi, assured the Principal Secretary that the Foundation will donate 1 million tree seedlings annually to support the Mau rehabilitation initiative. This is more than a pledge—it is a responsibility to honor the legacy of heroes like Field Marshal Dedan Kimathi, who fought for land and freedom. Today, that same spirit drives the fight for climate justice and environmental restoration.

Linda Mau, Boresha Maisha!

The slogan says it all: Protect Mau, Improve Life. Restoring Mau is not just about trees—it is about water security, food security, clean energy, climate stability, and the wellbeing of every Kenyan.

Each seedling planted is a step toward a greener, safer, and more prosperous future. But the task is monumental, and it calls for collective action. Every Kenyan, every partner, every organization has a role to play.

Be Part of It

The Mau belongs to all of us, and so does its future. By joining hands in the Linda Mau, Boresha Maisha initiative, we can ensure that this vital ecosystem continues to nourish generations to come.

Together, we can restore Mau. Together, we can restore hope.
