‘Water for Peace’

World Water Day 2024

Every 22nd March since 1993, the world celebrates World Water Day in which awareness on water-related issues and water challenges is created. In the year 2024, the event has carried the theme ‘Water for Peace’ under which water is to be conserved as limited water access or pollution causes a spark of conflict and tension. Lack of clean water negatively affects human health, education and economic growth.

Dedan Kimathi Foundation acknowledges the global attention on water and offers immense support in cleaning and protecting water catchment areas. In the past, the Foundation has conducted series of river clean ups and multiple indigenous and bamboo tree planting exercises along rivers and water reservoirs such as Sasumua Dam in Kinangop, Nyandarua County to protect them.

Today, the Foundation Environment Conservation team participated in ‘Waithaka kwa Bridge’ river clean up activity in Dagoretti to display its devotion in fighting water pollution to keep rivers flowing to harness peace in communities through increased clean water access. The event, organized by Dagoretti Greeners Community in collaboration with Nairobi County Government brought other environmental activists including Upendo wa Mazingira (UWAMA) group under Studio Ng’aari Foundation and Green Scouts Association.

Water pollution caused by heavy solid waste disposal in rivers and water reservoirs was highly regarded as a hindrance to harmonious existence of members of communities depending on them for domestic, industrial and agricultural use.

In his brief address to the participants, Dedan Kimathi Foundation Environment Conservation team leader, Mr

Dickson Maina called upon patriotic citizens to protect water bodies and catchment areas as their destruction pose dozens of catastrophic effects to human existence and development. He further called upon tree growing agencies and organizations to plant the right species of trees along the water bodies for maximum protection as species like Eucalyptus drain the water.

Dedan Kimathi Foundation Peace Initiative, under Dedan Kimathi Foundation advocates for proper utilization of water as an invaluable, irreplaceable natural resource with a high ability to cause chaos or peace depending on human behaviour.
